Environmentally friendly packaging (often referred to as ecological or eco-packaging) consists of materials designed so that their production, use, and disposal have the least possible negative impact on the natural environment. Amidst rising waste levels and climate change, they represent a key element of modern commerce and logistics.
Main objectives of using eco-packaging
- Plastic reduction: Replacing traditional, slow-to-decompose plastics with natural or recycled materials.
- Lowering the carbon footprint: Using renewable and local raw materials, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions during production and transport.
- Circular Economy: Designing packaging so that it can be easily recycled, reused, or safely returned to nature.
Most popular types of eco-friendly materials
- Paper and cardboard (FSC-certified): The foundation of most eco-friendly shipments. Corrugated or solid cardboard boxes are 100% renewable and easily recyclable. FSC certification confirms that the raw material comes from legal and sustainable forest sources.
- Biodegradable void fill (packing peanuts): A safe alternative to traditional Styrofoam or bubble wrap. They are made from plant starch (e.g., corn or potato). They are completely non-toxic, water-soluble, and decompose quickly in compost.
- Recycled materials (rPET and recycled paper): Utilizing previously used raw materials, which saves new natural resources (e.g., the water and energy required to produce paper or plastic).
- Paper tapes and labels: Instead of plastic tapes with synthetic adhesives, paper tapes coated with natural adhesives (e.g., rubber-based) are used. Importantly, they can be disposed of along with cardboard boxes, as they do not interfere with the recycling process.
Why choose eco-friendly packaging?
- Protecting Earth’s resources: They reduce the amount of waste accumulating in landfills and oceans.
- Meeting consumer needs: Modern consumers—especially young people and young adults—pay close attention to whether brands care about the planet. Eco-friendly packaging builds trust in the company and makes the shopping experience more satisfying.
- Regulatory compliance: Regulations in Poland and the European Union are increasingly restricting the use of single-use plastics while promoting environmentally friendly solutions.
