Eco-friendly packaging – what is it and why is it gaining popularity?

Eco-friendly packaging (often referred to as “green packaging”) consists of materials designed to minimize negative environmental impact. Its goal is to reduce waste, conserve raw materials, and ensure ease of recycling or natural decomposition.
In an era of rapid e-commerce growth and rising consumer environmental awareness, traditional plastics are increasingly being replaced by modern, planet-friendly alternatives.

Key features of eco-friendly packaging

For packaging to be considered eco-friendly, it typically meets at least one of the following criteria:
  • Biodegradability: Decomposes through the action of microorganisms within a relatively short time, leaving no toxic residues.
  • Compostability: Can break down in home or industrial composting conditions, turning into organic fertilizer.
  • Recycled materials: Made entirely or partially from materials recovered through recycling processes (e.g., waste paper, recycled plastic/rPET).
  • Reusability: Designed to be used multiple times before final disposal.

Popular types of eco-friendly packaging materials

  1. Certified (FSC) cardboard and paper: The foundation of most eco-friendly shipping solutions. Corrugated or solid cardboard boxes are 100% recyclable. FSC certification guarantees that the wood used in production comes from responsibly managed forests.
  2. Biodegradable void fill (packing peanuts): An alternative to bubble wrap or Styrofoam. They are produced from materials such as corn or potato starch. They are fully water-soluble and biodegradable.
  3. Recycled film (rPET) and bio-based films: Where moisture protection is required, films made from recycled plastic waste (rPET) or compostable films produced from biopolymers (e.g., starch) are used.
  4. Paper tapes: These replace traditional plastic tapes. They feature a natural adhesive (e.g., rubber-based) and can be disposed of in the bin along with the cardboard, as they are suitable for joint recycling.

Why choose eco-friendly packaging?

  • Environmental protection: They reduce the amount of waste accumulating in landfills and limit carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Brand image (Eco-friendly): Modern consumers are more likely to choose companies that care about the planet. Aesthetically pleasing, minimalist eco-packaging creates a positive shopping experience (the “unboxing” effect).
  • Regulatory compliance: The European Union and many national governments are introducing increasingly strict regulations and fees regarding single-use plastics, compelling businesses to change their logistics practices.
