Large-format packaging (also known as industrial or pallet packaging) consists of specialized, large-scale packaging systems designed for the transport, storage, and protection of goods that are exceptionally large, irregularly shaped, or heavy.
Unlike standard courier boxes, these are designed with B2B logistics, international transport, and the heavy industry, automotive, and construction sectors in mind.
Main types of large-format packaging
- Large corrugated cardboard boxes (often 5- or 7-ply): Extremely strong, high-capacity boxes, often dimensioned to fit standard pallets (e.g., Euro-pallets) precisely. Used for shipping household appliances, flat-pack furniture, or large industrial components.
- Heavy-duty corrugated cardboard crates: Robust containers that serve as alternatives to traditional wooden crates. They provide a complete protective barrier for goods weighing up to several hundred kilograms.
- Pallet containers (Octabins / Big Boxes): Specialized, high-capacity cardboard containers—usually octagonal or rectangular—used in the chemical and food industries (e.g., for transporting granules, fruit, or bulk materials) as well as in recycling.
- Pallet dividers and profiles: Components made of heavy-duty corrugated cardboard (e.g., BC-flute or triple-wall) that protect palletized goods from shifting and from damage caused by securing straps.
Key advantages of large-format packaging
- Resistance to extreme loads: Thanks to the use of thick multi-layer corrugated board (five- and seven-layer fluting), they withstand immense vertical pressure, enabling safe stacking of goods (pallet upon pallet).
- Transport space optimization: They are designed to fit standard truck and pallet dimensions, allowing for maximum utilization of cargo space and reduced logistics costs.
- Lightweight compared to wood or metal: Large-format cardboard solutions are significantly lighter than traditional wooden crates, directly reducing the total shipment weight and saving fuel.
- Eco-friendliness and ease of disposal: Once used, large cardboard packaging is 100% recyclable, eliminating the issue of costly industrial waste disposal (unlike plastic or wood-based crates).
