Solid board – what is it and how is it made?

Solid board is a thick, rigid paper-based material that, unlike corrugated board, does not contain an inner fluted layer. It consists of one or more layers of cellulose pulp, recycled paper, or wood pulp, compressed tightly under high pressure.
This results in a structure that is completely uniform, smooth, and dense. It is often finished with an additional layer of white or coated paper, giving it an elegant appearance and facilitating high-quality printing.

Main types of solid board

Depending on the raw materials used and the intended application, solid board is categorized into several basic types:
  • Recycled board (GD, GT): Produced entirely or predominantly from recycled materials (waste paper). It typically features a grey or brown reverse side and a white top side. It is a more economical and eco-friendly option.
  • Cellulose board (GC, UC): Manufactured from pure cellulose fibers. It is characterized by superior quality, a snow-white color (on both the top and bottom sides), high rigidity, and certification for direct food contact.

Key advantages of solid board

  • Perfectly smooth surface: It provides an excellent substrate for multi-color printing and finishing processes (such as lamination, UV varnishing, and embossing), enabling the creation of highly attractive visual effects. High rigidity despite low thickness: Thinner than corrugated board, yet its high density ensures excellent rigidity and resistance to bending.
  • Precision processing: Ideally suited for cutting, creasing (folding), and die-cutting complex shapes.
  • Aesthetics: Packaging made from this material looks elegant and neat, which significantly influences customer perception of the product.

Common applications

  • Cosmetics and pharmaceuticals: Boxes for creams, perfumes, medicines, or dietary supplements.
  • Food products: Packaging for tea, coffee, and confectionery, as well as frozen foods (when treated with a suitable barrier coating).
  • Electronics and small appliances: Individual product boxes designed to fit inside bulk shipping cartons.
  • Stationery and games: Covers for books and notebooks, board games, puzzles, and premium paper bags.
